Luxury Outdoor Living: Composite Decks & Modern Railing

Johns Creek homeowners expect more from their outdoor spaces — and the materials need to match. We build exclusively with Deckorators composite and modern cable railing for decks that look stunning year-round without the maintenance headaches of traditional wood.

Certified Deckorators Installation

Need Construction is a certified Deckorators Pro installer — earned through manufacturer training and proven installations across North Fulton County. Every deck we build in Johns Creek follows Deckorators' exact specifications, which means your project qualifies for extended warranties that uncertified builders can't offer. We've installed composite decks in neighborhoods from Shakerag to Ocee, and each one meets the same exacting standard.

Cable Railing for Unobstructed Views

Cable railing for decks is our most requested railing upgrade in Johns Creek. Thin stainless steel cables strung between sleek posts give you clean sightlines to your landscaping, the tree canopy, and Johns Creek's wooded lots — without the visual clutter of traditional balusters. We use 316 Marine Grade stainless steel exclusively because it won't rust or corrode in Georgia's humidity, even decades down the road.

Custom Multi-Level Deck Designs

Many Johns Creek properties — especially along the Chattahoochee River corridor and in communities like Country Club of the South — feature sloped backyards that call for multi-level deck designs. We create distinct zones for grilling, dining, and lounging that follow your property's natural grade. Integrated LED lighting in stair risers and post caps lets you use every level safely after dark, and built-in bench seating maximizes your usable space.

Code-Exceeding Structural Framing

Every deck we build in Johns Creek starts with structural framing engineered to exceed Georgia residential building codes — not just meet them. We use pressure-treated southern yellow pine for the substructure with stainless steel hardware at every connection point, paired with properly spaced footings sized for your soil conditions. The City of Johns Creek inspects every phase, and our crews are used to passing on the first visit because we don't cut corners on what you can't see.

Johns Creek's mature neighborhoods — from the established homes near Newtown Park to the larger lots in Shakerag — are prime candidates for outdoor living upgrades. A well-built composite deck adds real value to your property while giving your family a low-maintenance space to enjoy year-round. Traditional wood decks look fine on day one, but by year three in Georgia's climate you're spending weekends sanding, staining, and replacing warped boards. Deckorators composite eliminates that cycle entirely.

Whether you're adding a new deck to a home near Johns Creek Town Center, replacing an aging wood deck in Ocee, or designing a multi-level outdoor living space overlooking the Chattahoochee, our crew manages every step. Design consultation, City of Johns Creek permitting, construction, and final walkthrough — all handled by one team that's been building decks across North Georgia for over eight years.

Screened Porches & Covered Spaces

Screened Porches & Covered Outdoor Spaces

Enjoy Johns Creek's evenings without the mosquitoes. Our custom screened porches and covered outdoor spaces extend your living area into Georgia's outdoors — with vaulted ceilings, cedar accents, and features that make the space truly yours.

Custom Screened Porches with Vaulted Ceilings

A screened porch is one of the highest-ROI improvements you can make to a Johns Creek home. We design each porch to match your home's architectural style — whether that's the craftsman detailing common in Newtown or the transitional look popular in newer developments near State Bridge Road. Vaulted ceilings with exposed cedar beams open up the space and make even a modest porch feel expansive.

Our screened porch builds include ceiling fans for airflow, recessed lighting for evening use, and premium screening that keeps even the smallest gnats out. Many Johns Creek clients add retractable screen panels that let you open the space completely on mild days and close it tight when the bugs arrive in summer. If you want a fireplace to extend use into fall and winter, we integrate gas or wood-burning options with proper venting built into the roof structure.

  • Vaulted ceilings with exposed cedar beam accents
  • Outdoor fireplace integration for cooler autumn nights
  • Retractable screen panels for flexible use year-round

Underdeck Drainage & Covered Living Areas

If your Johns Creek home has an elevated deck — common on properties with walkout basements along the Chattahoochee corridor — you're sitting on untapped living space beneath it. We install underdeck drainage systems that channel rainwater away from the area below, creating a completely dry patio or outdoor room underneath your existing deck. Systems like Trex RainEscape integrate between the joists and funnel water to perimeter gutters, invisible from above.

For the underside, we install finished ceiling systems that give the space a clean, polished look. Add outdoor fans, lighting, and a TV mount and you've essentially doubled your outdoor living area. Johns Creek homeowners in communities like St. Ives and Rivermont have used this approach to create covered outdoor kitchens and dining areas without building a separate structure. Our roof tie-ins use GAF certified materials that match your existing roofline for a seamless transition.

  • Trex RainEscape in-joist drainage — invisible from above
  • Finished under-deck ceilings for a polished look
  • GAF certified roof tie-ins matching your existing roofline

G

"It's tough to find people you feel like you can trust not to try and get over on you. I spoke with Wes about work I needed to get done and was surprised at his level of honesty and professionalism. Putting that with the word of mouth on the quality of his work... and I wouldn't/won't hesitate to work with him on my next project."

"We had a major project to be undertaken. Need construction to the rescue!! We had water damage to some of the framing on the home exterior and major deck demo and rebuild. They handled it all. I had some unique requests that I wanted installed on my deck. The DekDrain rain system along with the full composite Dekorators Summit boards and railing with a cocktail rail was our desire. We also had to have a concrete patio area below. Wes and his team made it all happen. The subframe was built with better materials that any other contractor had even offered and I was impressed with that alone. I have no doubt that hurricane force winds would have no effect on this fortress of a deck. Even the city inpectors were wowed by the build quality. The craftsmanship and finishing of the final product is top tier. They will take the time to make sure it's your dream come true."

FAQ

Deck Building & Cable Railing FAQs for Johns Creek

Common questions from Johns Creek homeowners about composite decks, cable railing for decks, screened porches, and project costs.

What is the cost of cable railing per linear foot in Johns Creek?

Cable railing for decks in Johns Creek typically costs between $60 and $150 per linear foot installed. The biggest factor is material — 316 Marine Grade stainless steel sits at the higher end but outlasts everything else in Georgia's humidity. Aluminum cable systems come in closer to $60-$80 per foot. Stairway runs cost more due to the angled tensioning required. For a standard 200-square-foot deck with railing on three sides, expect total railing costs between $3,500 and $8,000. We provide exact line-item pricing during your free on-site estimate.

How long does a composite deck last in Georgia?

Deckorators composite decking carries manufacturer warranties ranging from 25 to 50 years, and we've seen it perform exceptionally well across Johns Creek and North Fulton County. Georgia's humidity, UV exposure, and termite pressure destroy traditional pressure-treated lumber in 10-15 years, but composite resists all three without staining, sanding, or sealing. Homeowners in Shakerag and Newtown neighborhoods have Deckorators decks we installed years ago that still look factory-fresh with nothing more than an occasional soap-and-water rinse.

Are permits required for deck replacement in Johns Creek?

Yes, the City of Johns Creek requires a building permit for most structural deck work, including replacements, new builds, and any deck attached to your home or standing more than 30 inches above grade. Need Construction handles the entire permitting process for you — we prepare the site plans, submit to the city, and schedule all required inspections. Permitting typically adds about a week to the project timeline, but it protects your investment and avoids issues when you sell your home down the road.

Why choose Deckorators over Trex for my Johns Creek home?

Deckorators uses mineral-based composite (MBC) technology instead of the wood-flour cores found in Trex and most competitors. The result is a board that's denser, stronger, and more resistant to moisture absorption — a real advantage in Georgia's climate. MBC boards won't swell, buckle, or develop mold pockets the way wood-core composites can over time. They also offer a superior strength-to-weight ratio, meaning longer spans with fewer support posts for cleaner deck designs. As certified Deckorators installers, we can offer extended manufacturer warranties that uncertified builders can't match.

How much does it cost to build a deck in Johns Creek?

A pressure-treated wood deck in Johns Creek runs roughly $25 to $45 per square foot, while composite decking from Deckorators falls between $55 and $95 per square foot. A standard 300-square-foot composite deck typically lands between $16,000 and $28,000 depending on railing choices, stairs, and elevation. Custom features like built-in seating, outdoor kitchens, or multi-level designs push costs higher. We provide detailed estimates broken down by line item so you see exactly where your budget goes — no hidden fees, no surprises at the end.

Can cable railing be used with wood decks?

Absolutely. Cable railing pairs well with wood decks, but the posts need to be beefier than what you'd use for traditional balusters. Cable railing generates significant horizontal tension — around 200-300 pounds per cable — so you need heavy-duty end posts anchored into the deck framing, not just surface-mounted. Hardwoods like Ipe handle this tension naturally. For cedar or pressure-treated lumber, we reinforce the corner and terminal posts with steel backing plates. We've installed cable railing on wood decks throughout Johns Creek with great results.

What is the best way to waterproof under a deck?

The most effective under-deck waterproofing uses an in-joist drainage system like Trex RainEscape, which installs between your deck joists and channels water to gutters at the perimeter. This creates a completely dry space beneath your elevated deck — usable for a patio, storage, or an outdoor living area. Under-deck ceiling systems like RainAway create a finished look from below with vinyl panels. For Johns Creek homes with walkout basements and elevated rear decks, an under-deck drainage system can effectively double your outdoor living space.

Do you offer financing for large outdoor living projects?

Yes, we offer flexible financing options for Johns Creek homeowners. Qualified buyers can take advantage of 0% interest plans for up to 18 months, making it easier to invest in a premium composite deck or full screened porch build without paying everything upfront. We partner with established lending providers so your approval process is fast and straightforward. During your estimate appointment, we'll walk you through the available financing plans and help you find the right fit for your project budget.
